Bee Bot Lesson plan - Year 2/3

Lesson 1:
iPad app - flower levels 1-12
Partner work - purely explore
At the end of the lesson come together and discuss the app/what they have learnt
Scribe onto poster

Lesson goals: to explore digital systems-the bee bot app.
Knowledge and understanding - digital systems

Intro:
Link iPad to IWB. Show class the bee bot app.
Hand out iPads. Students to find app and access level 1 flower mode.

Activity:
Explore with a partner level 1. Making comments on post it notes on how to play as they go and/or their thoughts on the game, what else could they do
As they become more familiar with the app, they can progress through the levels.

Closing summary:
One person from each group comes up and sticks the post it notes and shares what they have learnt.
Discuss as a class.

Goals achieved: from post it notes and sharing with the class

Lesson 2:
iPad app - chase the sheep/chickens
Partner work - purely explore

Name bee bot
Explore the use of bee bots. No mat.
Stop and discuss what they have learnt as a class. Write all down.

Link iPad to IWB.

Activity
Get students to come up with names for their Bee Bots.
Write them down on post notes and get them to share with the rest of the students. Students then go off in partners and explore hands on with their Bee Bots.

One person from each group comes up and sticks the post it notes and shares what they have learnt.
Discuss as a class.

Lesson 4:
Watch a snippet of Bee Movie.
Use a bee bot mat. Explore first.
Stop and discuss what they have learnt as a class.

Intro
Watch the 5 minutes of the Bee movie to engage students.
Discuss what the bees are doing.

Activity
Explore the use of a bee bot mat.
Think pair share as they go about what they are learning, what they like and what they would like to know.

Lesson 5 & 6:
Pre made Task cards - link to mapping and problem solving (Numeracy)
Task cards - how to collect honey from the bee hive and get back home.
In groups, follow task cards.

Activity
Explore the bee bot mats.
Have a go at the task cards.
Think pair share as they go about what they are learning, what they like and what they would like to know.

Lesson 7, 8 & 9
Make your own grid map - measure 15cm x 15cm grid boxes in the wet area
Examples: chalk, masking tape, butchers paper, etc
Synchronise buzzing - programming bee bots for map

Intro
Discuss the important of a grid map with bee bots
Explicitly go through the 15cm x 15cm grids. Explain why they are needed.
Do an example with the class.

Activity
Make your own grid map - measure 15cm x 15cm grid boxes in the wet area/on butchers paper. Link to bee movie - finding the bee hive. Bringing the honey back.
Use bee bots to experiment with your map.

Closing summary:
Come back and share as a class what students have learnt, what they like and what they would like to know.

Lesson 10:
Make task cards for another student to use.
Share with a partner - get the instructions and they need to follow it.

Intro
Discuss the important of a grid map with bee bots. Importance of the task cards. What is required on the task cards.
Do an example with the class using a pre made map.
Explicitly go through each step for the task cards.
As a class - Use the bee bot to follow the task cards.

Activity
1. Make your own task cards for a partner to follow to be able to get to the beehive and get the honey.
2. Follow your partner's task cards using their bee bot map. Give feedback to partner on their task cards.

Closing summary:
Come back and share as a class how effective their partner's task cards were

Teacher observation(highlight rubric as you observe each student) and record student feedback.
