STEM Lesson Plan & Activities - BEEBOT Year 5/6

Lesson 1

STEM: Beebots Challenge: Find a way to get a message from one classroom to another

Unplugged coding activities: Students to program another student to move around the room e.g. moving from one chair to another, moving through obstacles and completing a set of five actions at once.

Students to come up with a set of written directions to move a cup across a table and through different obstacles

Lesson 2

Introduction to beebots: Safety aspects, How to use it (student centred approach). Students get time figure out what the beebot does and how it moves. Questions to ask:

-What does it do?

-How does it work?

Show students videos on how other students have used beebots.

Lesson 3

Students then figure out how far one arrow press goes by using measuring tools to support their answer.

Students come up with a set of directions to move the beebot to a chair and back and move the beebot around obstacles.

Lesson 4

Students to measure distance from Room 15 to every other classroom using trundle wheels. Then scale it down to a beebot distance on a school map.

Lesson 5

Students to write down their code for their beebot to travel from Room 15 to every other classroom. Students trial their code.

Lesson 6

Students to write down their code for their beebot to travel from Room 15 to every other classroom. Students trial their code.

Lesson 7

Students watch all groups perform their code using a beebot. Students film their beebot performing the code.

Lesson 8

Reflection and review: Students watch videos back as a whole class and discuss for each group:

-What worked?

-What didn’t?

-What could I do to improv
