STEM Lesson Plan & Activities - SPHERO Year 5-6

Activity for Sphero

Lesson One

Resources : Sphero

Lesson goal: To learn about and use 'Sphero'

Activity: Learn to programme and use Sphero using some of the hands on activities provided.

Lesson Two

Resources : Sphero

Lesson goal: To learn about and use 'Sphero' to go as fast as possible.

Activity: Practice and use Sphero to go as fast as possible in a straight line. Also students construct obstacle course to challenge each other.

Resources : Sphero, pedometer or like, stopwatch.

5 and 6 Science

Lesson Three

Lesson goal: To learn about and use 'How to work out speed'.

Intro: Show animals and machines moving - What are their speeds. How fast do you think you can run? How can we find out?

Activity : Watch video clip about speed calculation.

Leave to students in groups of three to work out how to use Sphero to help.

Possibly measuring distance travelled by Sphero in a set time.

Use same method to record student(s) running.

Lesson Four

Resources : Sphero, pedometer or like, stopwatch.

5 and 6 Science, poster info on planet distances from sun.

Activity: Students work out ratio for distances from internet to fit on the oval.

They mark on oval distances of planets from sun using this ratios.

Lesson Five

Resources : Sphero, pedometer or like, stopwatch.

5 and 6 Science. Water trough using plastic sheeting and wood.

Activity: Students work out speed when running through water and Sphero going through water.

Discuss is same or different to what happened on land.

Is there a way to make this experiment different.

Lesson Six

Resources : Sphero, pedometer or like, stopwatch.

5 and 6 Science, measurable  distance running area on different surfaces - sand,    bitumen, grass.

Activity

Students do calculations to work out speeds on different surfaces for students and Sphero.

Surfaces possible grass, bitumen and sand.
