STEM Lesson Plan & Activities - SPHERO Year 5

LESSON PLANS FOR USING SPHERO IN THE UPPER PRIMARY CLASSROOM:

COLONISING MARS

LESSON 1 Brainstorming what is needed in order to colonise the planet Mars; what would people need in order to successfully live on Mars?

LESSON 2 Learn how to drive and steer the spheros; learn some basic coding – how to make them go forwards and backwards, turn etc.

LESSON 3 Orbiting speeds of the various planets around the sun. Experiment with one being in orbit being Mars and another sphero navigating beside it to simulate landing

LESSON 4 Systematically searching an area of the planet. How do we search so that no areas are unexplored?

LESSON 5 Once the pathway has been determined, students must program the sphero to follow that path without deviating from it.

LESSON 6 Use the lights to create a communication system so that spheros can communicate with one another. Explore with mixing the three colours of light to create new colours.

LESSON 7 Break students up into smaller sub groups. Groups are responsible for looking at how to deal with water, housing, sanitation, food, oxygen, transport, health, education. Systems of robots roving the colony maintaining life.

LESSON 8 Colonising Mars; students must demonstrate their system in a class presentation, explaining its purpose and function. Peer evaluation at close of unit.
